Summary of Reports on Mining and Development in the Province of Espinar, Peru

The history of mining in Peru’s Espinar Province has involved decades of extraction by various companies with different legal frameworks, property regulations, environmental standards, and social responsibility. Mining in Espinar Province is the first successful experience in Peru involving the construction of a space for dialogue and direct negotiation between communities in a mine’s area of influence and the mining company, together with the participation of national and international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) as guarantors of the process. It is also the first case in Peru of a model through which the company contributes to local populations, providing them with a percentage of profits beyond its tax commitments with the state. On the other hand, the processes experienced by Espinar’s population exemplify the promises and contradictions that different populations and territories in the country have to live with when it comes to mining activities.

    The G20 And Gender Equality

Across G20 countries and beyond, women are paid less than men, do most of the unpaid labour, are over-represented in part-time work, and are discriminated against in the household, in markets and in institutions. In 2012 in the Los Cabos Declaration, G20 leaders committed to tackling the barriers to women’s full economic and social participation and to expanding opportunities for women in their countries. Oxfam supports this commitment, and calls on the G20 to go further and assess its agenda and actions on women’s rights and gender equality. During the Australian presidency, the G20 has the chance to make good its promises for truly inclusive growth – working to make women more resilient to economic crisis through gender-sensitive economic growth and gender-equal employment policies.

Project Philippines: The Adaptation Finance Accountability Initiative

Adaptation finance represents a significant and growing share of the total international funding flows to the Philippines. From 2009 to 2011 more than PhP 10 billion in climate adaptation tagged funding was committed for delivery to the Philippines from different international sources. But how much has been disbursed, to which sectors, using what modalities, and through which institutions? Is it reaching the local level to help the most vulnerable men and women adapt to climate change? This report takes stock of climate change adaptation finance committed to the Philippines from public sources of international finance from 2009 to 2012.
