Today, in reaction to news of the Trump administration’s memo for remaining USAID staff stating that most positions would be eliminated in the coming months, Oxfam America President and CEO Abby Maxman said:
“Today marks the Trump administration’s attempt to put a final nail in the coffin of USAID, by announcing that nearly all remaining staff will be terminated in the next three months. Congress must use its power and not sit idly by in the face of the Trump administration’s illegal attempts to abolish an independent agency.
“The assault on USAID is already having life or death consequences for millions around the globe who have relied on foreign assistance to access lifesaving food, water, and medicine. Now, with USAID effectively abolished, even more will suffer.
“The fight is not over – Oxfam America and others are still challenging this illegal assault on USAID and U.S. foreign assistance in the courts. We must see Congress step up to defend U.S. foreign assistance on behalf of the communities who are already reeling from the cuts, and in defense of the rule of law.”
