Oxfam reaction to the nomination of Governor Nikki Haley as the US Ambassador to the UN

By

In response to President-elect Donald Trump’s selection of South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley to be the next US Ambassador to the UN, Raymond C. Offenheiser, President of Oxfam America, made the following statement:

“As the US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley will be a critical voice for upholding the United States’ commitment to working together with other nations, UN agencies and civil society to create a safe, stable and just world. We hope Governor Haley will continue US efforts to make sure that civil society has a seat at the table and the access to contribute, debate and critique when necessary.

“The United Nations is dealing with several large scale crises – from Syria to climate change—  that require perseverance, creativity and a firm commitment to uphold international human rights and humanitarian law under all circumstances. Once confirmed, we hope that she will lead work with any and all parties to find peaceful resolution to ongoing conflicts, address other root causes of the global displacement crisis, and find solutions to help migrants and refugees find safety and opportunity, among many other critical issues.

“Nikki Haley has a record of speaking her mind. If confirmed, we hope she will raise that voice on behalf of the world’s most vulnerable people who suffer from hunger, violence and injustice around the world.”
