Ahead of President Trump’s call into the World Economic Forum, Oxfam criticizes his misplaced priority of “pandering to fellow billionaires”

By

In response to President Trump appearing at this year's World Economic Forum remotely via video conference, Nabil Ahmed, Oxfam America’s Director of Economic and Racial Justice, said:

“President Trump’s decision to dial into Davos—which now looks like a festival of wealth for the new Gilded Age—is a clear signal of what seems to be his main presidential priority: pandering to fellow billionaires. We expect President Trump to glorify his billionaire and corporate backers—so many of whom are eagerly awaiting the massive tax cuts they’ve been promised.

“The same corporations and billionaire owners being feted by President Trump are those who gouged prices and fueled inflation, making the lives of millions of Americans even less affordable. Now, ordinary families who are already struggling must brace for the impact of a slew of destructive executive orders and policy proposals—like tax cuts for billionaires—that sow chaos and further enrich an ultra-wealthy few, doing nothing to address the crises most people face.

“President Trump will be a president of and for billionaires, and his administration’s tax giveaways will fan the flames of inequality in the U.S. and globally. Billionaire wealth already surged by $1.4 trillion in the U.S. last year, and there’s no telling how much richer they will get under another Trump presidency.”
