In response to the revocation of the presidential memorandum for protecting women’s health at home and abroad and the reinstatement of the Global Gag Rule, also known as the Mexico City policy, Abby Maxman, Oxfam America’s President & CEO, said:
“The reinstatement of the Global Gag Rule by the Trump administration is a devastating blow to global health and women’s rights that will deepen inequality and endanger lives. By forcing healthcare providers to choose between much-needed funding and offering comprehensive care, including abortion care, this rule effectively cuts off critical services to millions of people, particularly women and girls in low-income countries.
“However, the effects of this policy ripple far beyond reproductive health. Clinics around the world that once provided a range of services, including contraception, HIV prevention, gender-affirming healthcare and maternal healthcare, may be forced to close due to funding shortages. This can leave entire communities facing preventable health crises without access to lifesaving care.
“Oxfam condemns this cruel and regressive policy, which uses women’s health as a political pawn. We are committed to advocating for the repeal of the Global Gag Rule and promoting policies that uphold the fundamental rights of women to make decisions about their own bodies. Every person deserves access to safe, affordable, and comprehensive healthcare, and we will continue fighting to ensure that U.S. aid supports those in need instead of enacting discriminatory restrictions.”
