Oxfam Reaction to Stalling of Sovereign Debt Bill

By

The New York Senate passed Senator Liz Krueger’s “champerty” bill S5623 last week. The Assembly failed to put its companion A5290, sponsored by Assemblymember Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas up for a vote. In response Ben Grossman-Cohen, Director of Campaigns for Oxfam America, said:

“There is no excuse for the Assembly’s inaction in addressing New York’s contribution to the global debt crisis that is punishing people in dire poverty all over the world. The current state of affairs is enabling Wall Street’s predatory behavior, and the New York Assembly cannot even manage to vote on a modest, uncontroversial bill to fix it.

“The passage of S5623 in the Senate shows the growing number of legislators who recognize their duty to address this topic. We look forward to pushing forward the most robust and ambitious possible reform package in 2025.”
