President Biden’s credibility “utterly squandered” without commitment to end Israeli atrocities in Gaza at UN General Assembly — Oxfam

By

Tomorrow, September 24, President Joe Biden will address the UN General Assembly meeting. Ahead of his speech, Oxfam America President and CEO Abby Maxman released the following statement:

“In his speech to the UN General Assembly tomorrow, foremost we need to hear one thing from President Biden: how he will use his power to end Israel’s atrocities in Gaza and ensure its compliance with international law in both Gaza and the West Bank. To do so, he must commit to finally stopping lethal arms sales to Israel and applying the leverage necessary to stop a spiraling conflict with dire humanitarian consequences. The United States holds a unique position with the ability to influence Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu; restoring the credibility of President Biden - and the United States - on the world stage rests on his willingness to act decisively to forge peace, especially in light of the latest escalations in Lebanon threatening to plunge millions more civilians across the region into crisis. He must use his influence to achieve a full and permanent ceasefire, the safe return of all Israeli hostages and illegally detained Palestinians, full access for humanitarian aid, and accountability for war crimes committed.

“But Israel’s atrocities in Gaza are not the only issues on President Biden’s plate. We call on him to reaffirm his commitment to the UN Charter and human rights, and to fight the climate crisis and growing inequality around the world. These affirmations must be backed by tangible action.  Whether it is continued support for civilians affected by the war in Ukraine or commitments to aid people experiencing the ravages of humanitarian and climate crises around the globe, including in Sudan – the world needs more than just words. As long as President Biden continues to obscure Israel’s flagrant violations of international law and provide the means for Israel’s unrestrained bombardment in Gaza, his legacy and the US’ credibility will be utterly squandered.”
